Cyber Teachers' Institute

CTI 102: ADVANCED Cyber Teachers' Institute

ATTENTION: Registered students. Getting started with CTI 102!

Developed in response to requests from the participants of the Cyber Teachers' Institute that we offered in the summer of 2001, CTI 102 is designed as a practicum experience where we evaluate the effectiveness of online instruction by examining web page design, navigation, usability, course syllabi, and evaluation instruments.

The content is broken down into six units that allow participants to apply the major benchmarks associated with effective online teaching. The course has been designed in a way that allows participants to follow a self-paced track, if they wish, and complete the course faster than the prescribed pace. Participants will review the course materials and have numerous opportunities to learn from each other and their reviews.

More specifically, participants will review and evaluate:

  • Strategies for building online community

  • Online course syllabi structure

  • Online course design effectiveness

  • Web page design and navigation

  • Holistic review of an online course

  • Student/Course evaluation forms

Highlights of concepts to be addressed in the review process:

  • Brief review of what makes an online course effective

    • Best practices in online learning

    • Sound instructional design models

  • Developing evaluation strategies and assessment measures

    • Determination of needs and goals

    • Planning instructional events

    • Assessing students and the effectiveness of a course

  • Applying the major benchmarks associated with effective online courses

Advisory: Teaching experience recommended. Online teaching experience preferred. CTI 101 recommended.

Course Length: Three weeks

Repeatability: May be repeated

Textbook(s): None

Other Notes:

Seventy-five percent of the coursework must be completed to pass the course and receive a certificate. Lurking is not enough. Upon satisfactory completion, participants receive a Cyber Teachers' Certificate.

Most institutions award professional development (growth) credits for the program. The minimum number of hours expected for the course is 30 (approximately two hours a day / per week, excluding weekends). Upon satisfactory completion of all three courses in the CTI series, participants quality to purchase a denim CTI shirt.
