Linking to Specific Forums and Posts Within D&PM

The following steps will help you locate the URL (web address) of a specific discussion forum, topic, or post for the purpose of directing the students’ attention to a specific discussion to help them find an answer or see a solution. The links are for the benefit of just the current class.

Important: These links should be created only within Discussions and Private Messages (D&PM) and not in other areas of an Etudes site. It is safe to link to Forums/Topics/Posts within D&PM of a current site, as none of that is copied over with ‘Import from Site’ to future courses (Only your topics marked, “I’ll Re-use” are copied). If links to discussions are added in tools outside of D&PM (i.e. within announcements, modules and assessments), when they are copied over to next term’s sites, the students in future sites would get “Access Denied” errors. They were not members of the original site and don’t have permission to view these discussions.

Workflow Overview

  2. Copy the URL to your Computer’s Clipboard.
  3. Create the Link using the Editor and embed it in a discussion post or private message.

Step 3: Create the Link (Embed it) into the Etudes Content of Choice Using the Editor

Tutorial: Embedding Links in Your Content with the CK Editor

Note: The URLs are very long and pasting them directly into a text window is not recommended. (Although this will work, it creates an “Ugly” Link in your content).

The preferred way is to create a Hyperlink (See the Tutorial for detailed instructions if needed).

  1. Type the Name of the Forum/Topic/Post in the Editor’s Text Window where you want the link to appear.
  2. Click/Drag to select the name using your mouse.
  3. Click on the Link Button in the Editor’s Toolbar to complete creation of the link.
  4. Paste the Link by Right Clicking in the URL Box and selecting Paste from the submenu.
