DESCRIPTION & WORKSHOP PLAN:
Join your colleagues and Dr. Judy
Baker in an interactive workshop about the need to design our online
courses with cognitive accessibility in mind, not just physical
accessibility (hearing and vision impairments).
The presenter will use examples to demonstrate the need for addressing
cognitive accessibility and provide justifications (e.g., Universal
Design).
There are many types of
cognitive and learning disabilities and an even wider variety of
interests and capabilities of users who have these disabilities.
This population is larger than
those with all other physical and sensory disabilities combined.
Improving web accessibility for
this audience will improve access for everyone.
Then, participants will be challenged
to brainstorm ways to improve cognitive accessibility of a sample Module.
Next, we will compare the group's brainstormed list with the cognitive
accessibility checklist that WebAIM has. See

Assistive Technology Compatibility
Next, the participants will be
divided into groups. Each group will be charged with developing a simple
Modules in Etudes (e.g., "Chopped" Lesson - on how to cook an egg with
a mystery ingredient) by following at least two cognitive accessibility
principles.
Then, each group will critique the others' Modules using a
rubric/checklist. The group with the lowest score on the cognitive
accessibility checklist will get CHOPPED!
