Vivie SinouVivie Sinou

Executive Director / CEO

Vivie is responsible for the strategic planning and vision of Etudes, Inc. as well as product management and development of educational software and applications to support online teaching and learning. Vivie formed the Etudes Consortium in 2002 and extended the use of Etudes LMS and services to distance learning programs to California Community Colleges.

In May of 2008, Vivie founded Etudes, Inc., and led Etudes from a campus project to a non-profit 501(c)(3), public charity organization that leads software development and offers e-learning services to higher education institutions. Vivie also spear-headed the Sofia Initiative for undergraduate education, and is helping shape the vision of open source and open education.

Prior to managing Etudes, Inc., Vivie served as the Dean of Learning Technology and Innovations at Foothill College (2000-2008), where she managed the distance learning program, grew its online degree and certificate offerings, and put Foothill College on the spotlight nationally with many technology initiatives. In 2004, Vivie led the adoption of Sakai and was a founding member of the Sakai Board, representing community college needs. 

Vivie was the recipient of the 2002 Technology Leadership Award from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. “She was chosen for the prestigious statewide award for her prominence within the arena of higher educational technological resources management, exemplary organizational management and leadership qualities, advocacy of effective use of technology in supporting institutional goals, and contributions to growth of the profession as a whole,” as per the selection committee. Vivie was also selected for the League Innovator of the Year Award for Foothill De Anza Community College District (2002).

Glenn R. GoldenGlenn R. Golden

Chief Architect

Glenn is responsible for the current and future technical success of Etudes, Inc., the learning management system, educational software applications, and the production infrastructures. He comes to Etudes, Inc. after 10 years at the University of Michigan, where he was an architect, designer and technical lead for Sakai, and was instrumental in Sakai’s creation and success. Glenn also partnered with Vivie Sinou in a Michigan / Etudes collaboration to design and develop Mneme – Test Center (a.k.a. Assignments, Tests & Surveys), and is continuing this work now as part of Etudes, Inc. Mneme has been adopted widely and was selected for a prestigious 2008 Mellon Award for Technology Collaboration (MATC).

Glenn has been leading the design and development of computer software products and systems in commercial, entertainment, scientific and educational areas since 1980, specializing in complex system architecture and design, and Java server / browser client software systems. He works out of the mid-west office of Etudes, Inc. in his home in Ann Arbor. Work, three children, rooting for Michigan Wolverine football and the Detroit Tigers, and a few hours of sleep pretty much fills up Glenn’s time. He would like to become a passable player of guitar and piano, but that may have to wait for retirement.

Senior Learning Systems Developer

Murthy is a senior software developer and architect and has worked extensively in the industry as an IT consultant on internet technologies. He holds bachelor in Engineering and a Diploma in advance computing.




Rashmi MaheshwariRashmi Maheshwari

Learning Systems Developer

Rashmi has worked as a software consultant for start-ups and high-tech companies on several E-Business projects. She is quite versatile and can work on any end like GUI/server side development and in any phase of software development – from requirement analysis to development. She holds a Masters in Computer Engineering from San Jose State University.



Marlene WilkendorfMarlene Wilkendorf

Program Coordinator

Marlene has been with Etudes since 2001 bringing her administrative and organizational skills to the department’s ambitious technology projects and support services. Marlene holds a Database Systems and Concepts Certificate from University of California, Santa Cruz Extension and a Web Development Certificate from San Jose State University Extension. She is our resident online student having earned her Associate of Science Degree in Accounting from Foothill College in 2008 entirely online. Accepted at California State University East Bay, Marlene’s next goal is a Bachelors of Art in Human Development.

Marlene loves to read, especially to others, and is always on the lookout for books that will interest daughter Jori’s classes as well as audio books to liven her commute. 

Riba TaylorRiba Taylor

Certified Etudes Trainer ​& User Support Specialist

Riba is an adjunct associate professor at Mendocino College where she teaches online courses in English and becoming a successful student. She has “downsized” her teaching load, choosing to teach for only one college to make more room for her writing. In the past, Riba worked for Santa Rosa Junior College in the English and Applied Graphics departments, and taught online English classes for College of the Siskiyous and Foothill College, as well. She earned her BA in Women’s Studies at UC Berkeley a million years ago, and her MA in English (with a creative writing emphasis) from Sonoma State in 2001. Riba especially loves helping students become stronger learners, and she gets excited talking about teaching and learning with her colleagues. Her work as a certified Etudes trainer, both facilitating training sessions and providing support in the Etudes support forums, brings her a lot of pleasure and gratitude and a valued sense of being part of an engaged, cooperative, generous community of educators.


Karl PeterKarl Peter

Certified Etudes Trainer & User Support Specialist

Dr. Karl Peter (“KP”) earned a BS Degree in Biology & Chemistry from Fresno Pacific University in 1975 and began his career in veterinary medicine as a volunteer at a small animal hospital. He gained experience as an Exotic Animal Handler at Marine World and as a Veterinary Technician in an emergency clinic before admission to veterinary school. After earning a DVM degree at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980, KP worked for 12-years as an associate small animal veterinarian and served on the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of Silicon Valley. Subsequently he served as the Program Director and Professor of Veterinary Technology at the Foothill College Veterinary Technology Program for 22-yrs until retirement in 2014.

KP has a special interest in online teaching and learning, training colleagues in the effective application of the Etudes LMS, integration and use of technology in education, and technical writing and editing. KP assisted in the design of Etudes-NG and has served as a Cyber Teachers’ Institute facilitator. He is an Etudes Trainer and provides support to faculty in the Etudes User Group. Karl makes his home in the Santa Cruz Mountains with his wife, a horse, two dogs, four cats, and a flock of chickens. Pastimes include: travel, woodworking, movies, rock music, and reality TV.

Jim MarteneyJim Marteney

Certified Etudes Trainer ​& Marketing

After teaching at Los Angeles Valley College for over thirty-five years, Jim is now Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies. For his last 6 years, Jim was the college’s Distance Learning Trainer where he had the opportunity to help design instructor’s classes and improve their online teaching skills. Currently Jim is providing distance-learning training at West Lost Angeles College where he is helping develop their Quality Matters online course evaluation procedure. And, yes, he is still teaching online courses in communication. Jim is also pleased to be facilitating advanced courses in Etudes teaching strategies.
 Jim has more time now because his two children have graduated from college and moved back east to live. He is torn between enjoying the freedom of the empty nest and missing his children. In his free time Jim listens and plays music on the guitar and banjo and works out including keeping up his black belt in karate. And, of course, keeping his wife of 33 years happy. 

Megan BlevinsMegan Blevins

Certified Etudes Trainer ​& Instructional Technologist

Megan Blevins jumped into the field of education in 1996, and has been enthusiastically contributing ever since.  From 2004 to 2010 Megan was a classroom teacher, engaging junior high students’ hearts and minds in English, math, and science, and pioneering the use of instructional design models with careful analysis of standards, assessment data, and development of instructional materials.  In 2010, she shifted her focus from teaching to designing instruction and managing instructional systems.  Since 2010 she has worn many hats including: Instructional Systems Specialist for the Department of Defense managing the curriculum and programs of instruction for five major courses at the Maneuver Center of Excellence, a contracted training program designer and lead for the 2020 Company (whose clients include the Dept of Education, NOAA, and National Guard Family Programs), an assessment editor for CTB/McGraw Hill developing assessments for the common core consortium Smarter Balanced, and most recently serves as an Instructional Technologist for Hartnell College.  She earned her B.S. in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education program in 2004, and followed that up with her M.S. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University-Bloomington School of Education in 2014.  Her current work focuses on assisting faculty to enrich their courses through the integration of instructional technologies, and creating and providing online, hybrid, and web-enhanced training and technical support.

Suzanne Floyd, FacilitatorSuzanne Floyd

Certified Etudes Trainer ​

Suzanne has been a full time Language Arts professor at West Los Angeles College since 2001 and has been teaching writing online since 1998. She has been active with Etudes as a trainer since 2002. Suzanne has been a professional writer and editor having written for a variety of publications including a New York City-based trade journal and a Caribbean daily newspaper. She received her M.A. in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Writing Studies from San Diego State University, and taught at community colleges in New Jersey, Napa Valley and Los Angeles. In her spare time Suzanne enjoys hiking, biking, troubleshooting computer problems and helping online instructors and students.


Sarah PhinneySarah Phinney

Certified Etudes Trainer ​

Sarah is the Educational Media Design Specialist at Porterville College, where she assists her college’s faculty with building online and hybrid courses and helps them develop technology mediated content for their traditional campus-based courses. She has been working in distance education for 17 years, and has been a part of the California Community College system for 13 years. Sarah earned her M.Ed. in educational technology from Lesley University’s online degree program in 2000, and was trained as a CVC certified Etudes trainer in 2003. In her spare time Sarah can be found tending her garden, hiking with her dog, playing tennis, or tackling some new home-improvement project.


Vivian VarelaVivian Varela

Certified Etudes Trainer ​

Vivian Varela earned her MA in Sociology at CSU, Bakersfield and MS in Education-Online Teaching and Learning at CSU, Hayward. She is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology and Distance Education Coordinator at Mendocino College. Vivian has taught as an online adjunct at Taft College and for Los Angeles Valley College. Prior to coming to Mendocino College in 2007, Vivian provided tech support for the distance learning program at Taft College along with writing & maintaining the distance learning website. She enjoys web searching for supporting materials for her classes, reading, especially books that combine technology and society, and sewing/crafting in her spare time.


Margie WhiteMargie White

Certified Etudes Trainer ​

Margie White is an educational consultant, trainer, and online instructor. She has worked in the California Community College system since 1995. She has taught a variety of Business and technical online classes for over ten years and also provides instructional and technical support to online instructors at College of the Siskiyous. She had been an Etudes certified trainer since 2006 and is completing her Ph.D. in Instructional Design for Online Learning.
